Chief Justice Marilyn S. Kite announced today that the Justices of the Wyoming Supreme Court have elected Justice E. James Burke to be the next Chief Justice, effective upon the expiration of Justice Kite’s term on July 1, 2014.
Justice Burke was appointed to the Wyoming Supreme Court in January, 2005. Prior to his appointment, he served as a district judge in Cheyenne. Justice Burke received his
B.S. degree from St. Joseph’s College in Philadelphia, PA in 1971. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at F.E. Warren AFB until 1974. He obtained his J.D. from the University of Wyoming in 1977 and engaged in private practice in Cheyenne until his appointment to the bench in 2001. Justice Burke is married to Linda. They have three children, Matt, Leanna, and Erick, and four grandchildren.
Justice Burke will become the thirty-seventh Justice to serve as Chief Justice. In addition to his current duties, he will assume the administrative responsibilities of the Wyoming court system. During his four-year term, Justice Burke will serve as the Chair of the Board of Judicial Policy of Administration, Chair of the Judicial Nominating Commission, and as the Chief Justice of the Wyoming Supreme Court.
